R U OK? Day 2024

At Urban Protection Group, we believe that mental health is just as vital as physical well-being, especially in industries where high stress is common. This year’s R U OK? Day on 12 September 2024, comes with an important message: Ask R U OK? Any Day. While this is a National Day of Action, the message reminds us that meaningful conversations about mental health should happen all year round.

Why Ask R U OK? Any Day?

In the latest Suicide Prevention Australia report, 72% of Australians reported elevated distress. This means people in our lives—whether they are friends, family, or colleagues—may be struggling without showing obvious signs https://lifeinmind.org.au/news/r-u-ok-day-2024-theme-announced

A simple question can make a huge difference in letting someone know they are supported and not alone.

How to Start a Conversation

Starting a conversation about mental health can feel intimidating, but it doesn’t need to be complicated. Here are four steps to help guide the process:

  1. Ask R U OK? – Choose the right time and place. A private, comfortable setting is ideal.
  2. Listen – Give your full attention and listen with empathy.
  3. Encourage Action – Offer to help find professional support or suggest small steps like talking to a trusted person.
  4. Check In – Follow up later to see how they are doing. This shows continued care.

Are You Ready to Have the Conversation?

Before you start, ask yourself:

  • Am I in the right headspace?
  • Am I prepared for the possibility that the answer may be “No, I’m not okay”?
  • Can I dedicate the time needed to listen without judgement?

Pick Your Moment

Conversations about mental health don’t always happen in a single instance. Be patient, and if the person isn’t ready to open up, that’s okay. What’s most important is that they know someone is there when they’re ready to talk.
